In order to stay in business, Shell Mini Mart started a U-Haul dealership, and was operating it very successfully for 6 months. One day the Town of Gilbert code compliance walked in and requested I remove all the trucks, equipment and signage immediately because someone complained & I am not zoned correctly to operate U-Haul.
My Gas Station is not naturally visible, because it does not sit on a Hard Corner and has no canopy sign.
This action by the town financially hurt me, and probably would have put me out of business!
One of my customers who happen to be an Alliance member was concerned about me and advised me to immediately speak with Lisa, Aimee & Dow.
This was the best thing that ever happened to me – The Small Business Alliance!
When we analyzed the compliance code with the Alliance we found discrepancies in definitions and code interpretation. This gave us the opus to sit in with the town and after 9 months of negotiations with various departments & council members we reached an amicable solution, and worked on getting U-Haul reinstated. It was a win-win for a small business owner, town and the community.
Its all about perspective, problem = challenge, use the high road to achieve solution. I am a proud member of Small Business Alliance, because they are so passionate about helping small business owners be successful.

I own a home inspection, and construction consulting company. In the past I was a member of the Gilbert & the Chandler Chamber of Commerce.
2 years ago I decided to join the GSBA. (I am no longer a member of any Chamber of Commerce)
I know that with any organization you need to go to the mixers and network in order to receive a benefit. However, the GSBA provided more business leads for me in the first 3 months that the two chambers did in a year. This is kind of surprising considering the dues are a small fraction of the chambers dues are.
I have never felt so connected to the community as I do now.
Through the GSBA, their connection Groups, and their Statesman’s Tour, I now not only know what is going on in my community but I can make informed decisions about who I vote for.
I think the Statesman’s Tour is one of the biggest benefits to the GSBA and the shocking part is, you don’t have to be a member to benefit from it.
The candidates are interviewed and all asked the same questions. The videos of the interviews are posted on line for all to see. A public forum is provided to ask the candidates questions as well as time to meet the candidates.
I have always tried to make educated decisions when I vote. By the time I get done focusing on the national candidates and their qualifications, the local city and state offices have kind of been a crap shoot.
Not anymore. The GSBA Statesman’s Tour has made it easy to make educated decisions in not only the Gilbert town elections but at the state level as well.
The GSBA has provided a way for members and the public to interact with those that would like to be elected and have done a great job with it.

In February 2011 I moved my Chiropractic Clinic to Gilbert, and the Small Business Alliance was life saving in helping me obtain a certificate of occupancy. I'm excited to get more involved with the Alliance and its members. Thanks for all of you help! You guys are awesome!
On my way to the grocery store, when I noticed the temporary sign for Gilbert Small Business Alliance and wondered what was this all about. Curious, and being an owner of a small business in Gilbert I decided to check it out. Much to my pleasure I was greeted by Aimee Rigler, she was very enthusiastic and presented an outstanding explanation of the Gilbert Small Business Alliance. The organization sounded like something, we as business owners needed to support our voices and provide a forum to be able to make a BIG difference in our community. I returned to my office and decided to investment into this organization and that decision has been one of the best investments we made for being able to promote our business and begin to network within our community.
Since becoming a member in mid year our company BHB Repair & Maintenance has had numerous opportunities to attend business mixers begin to build an outstanding network of business contacts and sharing and obtaining referrals. Our community has been affected heavily on the current economy but through the Gilbert Small Business Alliance and my connections we are being able to keep our business going. I have not participated as much as I would like but the alliance offers a lot of other benefits — various business forums that can help each of our members with business planning, financial advice, and sales and marketing seminars. The Gilbert Small Business Alliance instills a sense of small town togetherness and support. If you are a small business in Gilbert you really need to consider this wonderful and very friendly group of business owners right here in Gilbert – as Aimee says “Where small Business has a BIG Voice”...
Being a member of the GSBA has helped me tremendously over the last year! Starting a new business can be very scary; well, it was for me. Trying to make connections and learning how to network is a big step and through the networking events hosted by the GSBA, I’ve accomplished both. I know the decision to becoming part of this group has helped me get my business of to a good start.
